FAQ · TORONTO / GTA / ONTARIO

Questions clients ask before the first trowel pass.

Direct answers from studio practice — not a brochure. Quotes still start with a photo of the wall.

Getting started

How do I get a quote?

Send a photo of the wall, approximate width and height, your city, and the finish you are considering on WhatsApp (+1-416-838-2544) or email. Quotes are written after that review. A site visit is used when the substrate, height, or wet area needs to be seen in person.

Do you work outside Toronto?

Yes across the GTA and selected Ontario projects when the scope justifies travel. Say the city with the photo.

Residential or commercial?

Both. Most work is residential feature walls and fireplaces. Boutiques, clinics, and hospitality reception walls are also in scope when the finish is architectural rather than a fast paint cycle.

How long does a typical project take?

A single feature wall is usually measured in days, not an afternoon: prep, coats, dry time, burnish or seal. Stairwells, full rooms, and 3D relief take longer. Ontario humidity and new-build drywall shrinkage can add wait time. A schedule is given with the quote.

Venetian plaster

What is Venetian plaster?

A multi-coat lime and marble-dust finish applied with a trowel and often burnished. It reads as mineral stone with movement, not as flat paint. In Toronto homes it is used on fireplaces, foyers, dining walls, and powder rooms that stay relatively dry.

How much does Venetian plaster cost in Toronto?

Labour and prep dominate the price. A single feature wall is typically a four-figure project. Full rooms, two-storey foyers, high polish, and relief cost more. There is no honest square-foot sticker without seeing the wall. Send a photo for a written range.

How long does Venetian plaster last in Ontario?

A correctly specified interior system is a decade-plus surface. It does not peel like cheap latex. What ends it early is bad prep, impact in hallways, leaks, or scrubbing it like satin paint. Seasonal house movement can telegraph hairlines; that is the building, not the marble dust “failing.”

Limewash

What is limewash?

A mineral wash of slaked lime and pigment. It soaks into a compatible surface and leaves soft movement instead of a plastic paint film. Light in an Annex or Rosedale room changes how it reads through the day.

Limewash vs paint for an Ontario home?

Paint if you want uniform colour and easy touch-ups. Limewash if the wall should feel like architecture. Ontario winters dry interiors; summers can be humid. Lime systems stay vapour-open when they are not locked under a heavy film sealer.

Can limewash go over existing paint?

Often, after the right primer and any leveling. Peeling or glossy oil paint in older Toronto houses has to be dealt with first. A sample board in the actual room matters more than a phone swatch.

Is limewash good on old plaster and lath?

It is often a better match than another vinyl coat if the plaster is sound. Hollow, leaking, or delaminating plaster needs repair first. Limewash is a finish, not a moisture fix for a damp Cabbagetown basement.

Fireplaces

Can plaster go next to a wood-burning firebox?

Only with correct clearances and a substrate that can take heat. The decorative coat is not a fire-rating. That is checked before specifying sheen or relief on the surround.

Should the finish run floor to ceiling?

Usually yes on a feature wall. Stopping at the mantel line often looks like a painted box. Include returns and the ceiling junction when the room can take it.

3D plaster

What is 3D plaster wall art?

Hand-sculpted relief built into the wall — botanical, abstract, or architectural. It is not a canvas and not repeating foam panels from a catalogue. Dining walls, headboard walls, stair landings, and boutique receptions are typical GTA placements.

Is 3D plaster heavy?

It is built in controlled layers. Deep relief needs a structural check. Shallow botanical work on a standard partition usually does not.

Murals and paint

Mural or wallpaper in a GTA house?

Wallpaper for speed and a repeating pattern. A mural when the composition must fit one specific wall. Condos sometimes prefer reversible wallpaper; owned homes in North York, Mississauga, and Oakville more often treat a mural as architecture.

Process

Do I need to empty the room?

Rarely for one feature wall. Furniture is shifted and protected. Full emptying is more common for a whole room or heavy dust from plaster repair.

Do you provide samples?

Yes. Custom tinted boards beat a phone photo. North light in Toronto houses makes warm showroom samples look colder on the wall.

Who applies the finish?

Mona Maghami leads the studio work. This is hand-applied decorative finishing, not a sprayed production line.

Care

How do I clean Venetian plaster or limewash?

Dust. Do not scrub like satin latex. Keep planters and humidifiers from soaking one corner. Stop leaks first if a stain appears. Local repair is possible; perfect invisibility on a high-polish wall is harder than on a matte lime wall.

Can I paint over plaster later?

Yes with compatible coatings, but you lose mineral quality and movement. Treat that as a last resort, not a plan.
